We recently announced the two seasoned captains, Rune Myre and Tommy Stensrud, that will take the helm of Norwegian Getaway, the largest ship to homeport in Miami year-round, launching in February and took the opportunity to ask them a few questions about their experience and how they feel about launching Norwegian’s newest ship!
Why did you choose a career in seafaring?
Captain Myre: I grew up in a fishing family. My grandfather took me deep sea fishing when I was only four years old. So, even at a young age, I knew then what I wanted. St the age of 15, I started commercial fishing to save enough money to attend maritime academy. Later on, I was drafted into the navy and served in the Norwegian Coast Guard before sailing the seven seas and ending up in the cruise industry.
Captain Stensrud: I always wanted to travel and see the world. I think there has always been a little bit of an explorer in me.
What’s the best part of the job?
Captain Myre: I love my job. I love the challenge it brings, especially the opportunity to work with 60 different nationalities and cultures. I also like the challenge it is to make things work out to the best no matter what and that we always make things happen as a team! It is also great to meet so many interesting people every day, all over the world with different stories and experiences! It is very rewarding to see that what we do makes a difference in people’s lives and that they all want to come back and cruise with them again.
Captain Stensrud: The best part of my job is the opportunity to interact with so many amazing people, both passengers and crew members. It’s very rewarding.
Getaway is very advanced in terms of navigation. Does this make your job easier?
Captain Myre: It doesn’t make the job easier, but it makes the job safer!
Captain Stensrud: Changes in navigational technology over the years have made a significant difference in our day to day job, especially when it comes to the safety of our guests.
Where do you hang out when you’re not at sea?
Captain Myre: At sea! When I am on vacation, I live in a house on the ocean in Norway where I sit and watch the ocean (unless I am on it fishing)….or up in the mountains fishing the lakes!
Captain Stensrud: I spend my vacation at home, in Canada, with my wife and three children.
What’s it feel like to be at the helm of the largest ship ever to home port in Miami?
Captain Myre: I am proud of course to have been chosen for this ship. I feel great about this, but my job is to make this a safe ship and to make sure that the guests that are cruising with us gets a vacation of a lifetime.
Captain Stensrud: I’m very honored. I’m greatly looking forward to being a part of the crew on the Norwegian Getaway.
What’s your favorite thing about Miami?
Captain Myre: I started my career with Norwegian out of Miami and therefore Miami is special to me. And of course being there for years knowing the pilots, agents and everyone involved in the business makes Miami feel like home away from home.
Captain Stensrud: Growing up in Norway, and now living in Canada, I can’t help but appreciate the year-round warm temperatures and beautiful beaches
