When I first arrived at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, I was immediately impressed by the size and structure of the yard facilities. Then, when Chief Officer Robert and Captain Ulf from Norwegian’s Site Team escorted me to the hall where Norwegian Getaway is being built, I was stunned and filled with excitement and anticipation.
Norwegian Getaway is huge and she is spectacular. At that moment, I couldn’t help but reminisce about the feeling I had in 1998 when I first set eyes on Norwegian Wind in Miami. I remember feeling very small compared to the ship, and this time, standing next to Norwegian Getaway at 325 meters long, 40 meters wide, and 18 decks high, I had that same feeling. Since that day in Miami, I’ve sailed many great ships and have had many great experiences, but for me, the experience of delivering Norwegian Getaway is a dream come true.
Upon “meeting” Norwegian Getaway for the first time, I already sensed that this ship has her own character. Walking around as she is being outfitted, you can truly see and feel her personality begin to take shape. I am so proud knowing that soon I will be sailing her with my team.
For me, being at the yard is extremely exciting. The entire team at Meyer Werft is doing a great job, and we continue to see exciting progress every day. Some areas are almost done, the engines are running and there are people working all over, around the clock. I have been extremely impressed with the building process and am blown away by the coordination and logistics involved. The building of Norwegian Getaway is German engineering at its best and it’s great to be here and be a part of this incredible experience. I can’t wait to welcome our first guests onboard!
